Do you keep falling asleep in meetings?

This has been around for a long time, but still relevant today.

Do you keep falling asleep in meetings, lectures and seminars? What about those long and boring conference calls? Here’s a way to change all of that :

1. Before (or during) the next meeting, seminar, or conference call, prepare yourself by drawing a square. I find that 5″ x 5″ is a good size. Divide the square into columns – five across and five down. That will give you 25 one-inch blocks.

2. Write one of the following words/phrases in each block :

  • Synergy,
  • Strategic fit,
  • Core competencies,
  • Best practice,
  • Bottom line,
  • Revisit,
  • Expeditious,
  • To tell you the truth (or “the truth is),
  • 24/7,
  • Out of the loop,
  • Benchmark,
  • Value-added,
  • Proactive,
  • Win-win,
  • Think outside the box,
  • Fast track,
  • Result-driven,
  • Knowledge base,
  • At the end of the day,
  • Touch base,
  • Mindset,
  • Client focus(ed),
  • Paradigm,
  • Game plan,
  • Leverage.

3. Now tick off the appropriate block when you hear one of those words / phrases.

4. When you get five blocks horizontally, vertically, or diagonally stand up and shout “BULLSHIT!”

Hi James, glad to have come across your blog through linkedin. The squares are a funny idea. I'll try that out next time someone is droing on and on and boring me to tears. I might pass on the shouting though.

  3. Laine D. says:

Very funny and sadly way too true James! You may have been sitting in on some of the sessions I've listen to recently. BULLSHIT BINGO ~ could be the new Xmas bestseller :DThanks for the moment of clarity/hilarityLaine D

  4. that was great….will definetly have to try this one! Thanks Crystal Canole

  5. PawPurrry says:

  6. Remi says:

Hi James, I found you on linkedIn. This is hillarious. I am definately going to try this out. There are some meetings that I sit in that want to makes watching the paint dry, extremely interesting.! …and just like Laine, I could possibly make this a christmas hit – I am attending a christmas dinner next week – this might be introduced as the new game of the season! Thanks so much for sharing.

  7. This is a startlingly good idea. People can make a grid for each boring “listening” session, such as church sermons, marketing meets, breakfast meetings, workshops, think-tanks and brainstorming sessions of all kinds. The words you can shout out are also fun to think up. “No!” is a good one.

  8. hah, ha, ha. This is a really good one. Since I am self employed I hope my meetings aren't so boring as to need this game to pass the time. I'd have only myself to blame.

  9. That idea made me laugh! I hear things like that so often that I don’t know if you have thought about a 3dimensional one?
